The Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) invites to the seventh edition of the annual symposium “Operating the Cloud”. The Future SOC Lab, a cooperation of HPI and the industry partners Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Dell EMC, Fujitsu, SAP, and SUSE provides researchers with free of charge access to a complete infrastructure of powerful hardware and software. Even though today, cloud computing has reached a certain degree of maturity, cloud computing has been a core research topic since the inception of the Future SOC Lab. To provide a forum for exchanging the latest insights on such a relevant, emerging technology, the "Operating the Cloud" symposium has been introduced.

Shifting its focus on a new, emerging technology, this years edition of the symposium is aligned around the topic of Persistent Memory. By blurring the line between main memory and storage, Persistent Memory is a key technology for getting hold of ever increasing amounts of data. However, even though commercial products equipped with Persistent Memory are becoming increasingly available, we have observed that both industry as well as the academic community are not fully aware about the implications and opportunities imposed by this new technology. The symposium aims to fill this gap through presentations and a hands-on session given by invited experts.
